What is difference between Powder Coating and Paint Spraying?

Powder coating and paint spraying are two processing technic in brake pad production. Both function is to form a protective cover on the surface of the brake pad, which has following advantages:

1. Effectively isolate the contact between steel back plate and air / water vapour, make the brake pads has better Anti corrosion and rust prevention function.

2. Make the brake pads have a more refined appearance. Manufacturers can make brake pads in different color as they want.

But what is the difference between powder coating and paint spraying process? And how do we choose them according to our needs? Let's start by understanding the principles of these two processes.

Powder coating:

The full name of powder coating is high Infra-red electrostatic powder coating, its principle is to use static electricity to adsorb powder onto the brake pad surface. After powder coating, heating and curing steps to form a film on the surface of the work piece.

This process can not be completed by a simple spray gun. It is mainly composed of a powder supply pump, a vibrating screen, an electrostatic generator, a high-voltage electrostatic spray gun, a set of recovery device, a high infrared drying tunnel and cooler part.

Advantages of powder coating:

1. Powder material is more environmentally friendly than paint

2. The adhesion and hardness of powder and the coverage effect of powder spraying are better than that of paint.

3. The recovery rate of powder is high. After being processed by the recovery device, the recovery rate of powder can reach more than 98%.

4. The electrostatic powder spraying process does not contain organic solvents and will not produce waste gas, so it will cause little environmental pollution and there is no problem in waste gas emission management.

5. Suitable for factory mass production, high degree of automation.

Disadvantages of powder coating:

1. The device need heating process and cooling part, so requires large floor space.

2. The cost is higher than paint spraying since it has many parts

Paint spraying:

Paint spraying is to use spray gun and air pressure to disperse the paint into uniform and fine droplets, and spraying paint onto the product surface. Its principle is to stick paint on the surface of brake pads.

Advantages of paint spraying:

1. Device cost is cheap, operate is also very cheap

2. The visual effect is beautiful. Because the coating is thin, the smoothness and glossiness are good.

Disadvantages of paint spraying:

1. When painting without protection, the benzene concentration in the air of the workplace is quite high, which is very harmful to the painting workers. The harm of paint to human body can not only occur through inhalation of lungs, but also be absorbed through skin. Therefore, protective equipment must be prepared when painting, and the working time must be limited, and the working place must have good ventilation conditions.

2. The brake pad must be painted manually, and need to be manually transported to the paint spraying chamber, which is only suitable for small brake pads (such as motorcycle and bicycle brake pads).

3. Paint spraying is easy to cause environmental pollution, and strict exhaust emission control measures are required.

So the manufacturers can choose the best processing technic according to your budget, local environmental requirements and painting effect.
